Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) is a strong antioxidant and is an essential ingredient in the body's production of energy and in the normal metabolism of fat and energy. It participates in biochemical reactions in our bodies that provide energy. Scientists have long believed that Co Q10 produces beneficial effects to the heart,1-5 brain,1,6 kidneys,1,7 and other tissues.8-9
Co Q10 levels are reported to decrease with age and to be low in persons with some chronic diseases such as heart conditions, muscular dystrophies, Parkinson's disease, cancer, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. Some prescription drugs may also lower Co Q10 levels. Depending on the cause of Co Q10 deficiency, supplementation or increased dietary intake of Co Q10 and the vitamins and minerals needed to produce Co Q10 may be effective.
A growing body of research suggests that using Co Q10 supplements alone or in combination with other drug therapies and nutritional supplements may help prevent or treat a variety of heart diseases including high blood pressure10. Researchers believe that the beneficial effect of CoQ10 in the prevention and treatment of heart disease is due to its ability to improve energy production in cells, inhibit blood clot formation, and its activity as a powerful antioxidant. A growing number of nutrition oriented doctors say that supplements of Co Q10 are absolutely essential for people with a variety of heart diseases, including cardiac failure.
